"My Plan Will Work"
Genesis 16:2 "[Sarai] said to Abram, "The Lord has kept me from having
children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family
thorough her."
A form of conceit is an exaggerated opinion of one's own ability to solve
problems. People often come up with ideas that are supposed to bring about a
solution when God does not at once answer their prayers or show them a clear
direction in life. At such times we, too, are inclined to offer our own
plans. Sometimes we are very positive and proudly affirm, "My plan will
work." What a sad mistake! What tragic pride!
Sarai made this mistake. God had promised Abram a son, the heir to whom the
blessed promise was given. The years passed, and still there was no son.
Sarai finally decided the Lord had forgotten, or worse, was not going to keep
His promise. Therefore she determined to take things into her own hands. She
gave her maid to Abram to be his wife. This was going to solve the whole
matter. Instead it caused nothing but misery.
This warning to us not to take things into our own hands. God has a plan. It
will not fail. That was evident in the gift of Isaac, and later in his
descendant, the "unspeakable gift," Christ Jesus.
The coming of Jesus should convince us that God always keeps His promises.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, teach us humility so that in dependence on Your
promises we may learn patiently to wait for the fulfillment of Your wonderful
plans for us. Help us in Jesus' name. Amen.
